I briefly worked with Jennifer. She is the most brilliant designer I have ever encountered, and I've been around some historic designers. It's sad that young designers have no idea who she is. She's a brilliant person. She was once named by Graphis as one of the top 12 designers in the world. She had a collection of her work secured by the SFMOMA for a show in 2001 and now is part of their permanent collection. Her typography was more refined than Carsons, and used a more classic pallet. I revere her work.
The AIGA annual was unfortunate. She created a masterpiece, which is exactly what the AIGA leadership was seeking, and then the world kind of turned on her. The creative brief called for the book itself to become an iconic symbol of the design of the era. But when award winning designers get their work turned cropped and cut, then they get pissed. Some probably felt shown up by Sterling—many complaints ensued. The bottom line is Sterling gave the AIGA what they wanted, and they really didn't take much responsibility for it. And I think that was kind of the beginning of the end.
I consider Jennifer a friend even though we have lost touch. She always treated me with fairness and in good ethos. Her design continues to inspire me.
