    Slappy, I think it has to do with perceived intelligence levels. We don't like killing anything that seems to look us in the eye, or interact, or express emotional states we can identify and empathise with. Anything that can generally be described as expressing human-like personality traits is considered too good to kill, whereas 'dumb' animals are okay to kill.
