I don't think Internet grammar does destroy brains or anything -> although I reckon there's a definite link between vocabulary and ability to think. The desire to express thought through language is an instinct; and language is what separates us from most other kinds of animal. Might be worth reading stuff by Noam Chomsky if you're interested in this idea.
Without words we can't have thought .. being able to specify concepts through words more precisely is useful. If you breakdown spellings and grammar too much then legibility and comprehension becomes a problem.. but in the English language there are a lot of very dumb rules and peculiarities which serve no purpose other than to discriminate against those who've been taught the rules, and those who haven't.
If anything, internet grammar is democratising; although unfortunately most people who use it have nowt useful to say.
