the 50/50 thing works at times but would you want to risk loosing a $6000.00 project based on them not being able to pay for 15 days?
If you can afford to wait them out, do so. If you have a contract, and they don't want to pay, sue them. You should state interest charges on late payments.
If you are operating as a company or as a serious freelance artist, they should take you serious. Just like they have to run their business, you have to run yours. Disclaim it and all your worries are gone.
Works for me!
Or you can work out a contract that states you need 30-50% before any project and the rest upon completion. If you are working at a fixed rate, they can ask you to bid a project and get the invoice rolling. You can then invoice them in anticipation of the project finishing.
If none of these things work for you, charge a rush fee.
Of course this is all relative to whether or not the client is worth waiting for or not.
