Have you ever owned a Mont Blanc ballpoint pen? They're pretty nice objects, quite beautiful, and well made... and they write really well.
However, being a ballpoint pen - the refill is all that's required to get the physical effect of writing with this luxury item. In the UK the refills are very inexpensive compared to purchasing a Mont Blanc pen - around 5 quid I think.
If Mont Blanc brought out a rule (set out in their terms and conditions) that you could only use this refill in an official Mont Blanc pen - but there were cheaper, equally good pens available, which accepted the refills - would you follow this rule?
Shouldn't there be a point where corporations are told to fuck off?
