I'm not disagreeing with the fact that it can work on other hardware. I remember the college days of being at people's dorms and watching them work on clones. And yeah, I never thought it was an issue and actually was a bit pissed when Apple wiped them out. But then I look at what their brand has grown to be and the fact that they even control and/or are present in 5%-10% of the market share (this is just my guess, most likely waaaay inaccurate) is pretty impressive to me. Especially when a lot of people had no clue what an Apple computer was back in the day.
That being said, it would be a valid argument to say that Apple has really just pushed it's OS with a glossy cover (iMacs, Aluminum Pros, etc), but I think the OS has grown to be pretty damn solid. I just don't think they're willing to give up this 1-2 combo they've created and succeeded with over the last 9 years.
