The really good ones don't necessary get worse, but they do certainly plateau and stop growing at the same rate as in their 20s, 30s and 40s. It varies but that's what I've seen.
And then there's Doyald Young, who continues to produce mind-blowingly beautiful work. That's largely because he's stayed current as technology has changed, which is especially notable for someone who designs type (among other things). He's moved from metal to Linotype to digital without skipping a beat.
For the rest of us though, yes we do plateau or get worse after a certain point.
