C'mon then, let's get the "we saved your ass in WW1 & 2" spiels out of the way.
What really happened was that you STARTED on the road to becoming the modern superpower that today could and can kick our arse.
Truth is, the UK gave up on you because they were stretched thin (militarily, ergo financially) elsewhere, pretty much like the USA today.
But, hey, enjoy your illusion of freedom, from the British or your own government. Happy 4th.
