It looks like the flash on the homepage is set to 12FPS. Looks really choppy and slow. Might want to bump that up to 30 (or 31) for starters.
My opinion is that a portfolio site should be built around the portfolio. The solution you have for showing the galleries is fine but it looks like it was tacked on to the site.
Finally, shrink that top section. Pushes down the page too far and it is at least 30% larger than it needs to be to have the effect you are going for.
All in all, you aren't going to win any awards with the site but with a few tweaks it'll do the job. The photography is what counts, just don't make it a hassle to get to it.
