Well, it is now time to _watch_ the media machine!! "They" did not get what they wanted - they are still suffering under 500 years of racist, christian, capitalist intrusion. The christian churches keep growing, undermining local medicine, healers and culture in general - the children are still whipped on a daily basis in christian schools, being called monkeys, animals and what not, and the capitalist machine keeps eating the trees, polluting the rivers and building roads everywhere.

If the Amazonian people got what they wanted, the world would have changed _substantially_.

What happens now is that politics set in, again, - small scale negotiations, corruption, bribery and the rain forest will still be eaten alive by global capital. Much bigger schemes than this are unfolding - after all, this was a little intervention by the Peruvian state.

The loggers, miners and oilers have never needed the law to destroy - they just do it anyway. National Geographic - a very conservative source in these matters - have estimated that Brasil alone has more than 100.000 km's of illegal road in the Amazon, built by capitalist extractivists.

Having spent several years in the Amazon I am often asked about the state of the forest: "Is it really dying?", to which I unfortunately have to answer: "I think it is dead." The idea of a huge forest, full of magic, wonder, hunting jaguars, swimming snakes and flying eagles - endless, infinite and marvellous - now only exists as just that: an idea. Broken up by criss-crossing roads, dried out, heavily polluted - "When the chemicals come the energies of the spirits leave", said our shaman friend once - and towns and their associated, forceful cash economy keep coming, keep growing.

“There are two sides: the agents of waste and the lovers of the wild. Either for life or against it. And each of us has to choose.”
