I think the question should be set as interactive digital media versus print, because there is more to the digital side than just the web. To answer the question:
I don't think you can do just one or the other anymore. Both are important and it is likely that there will be opportunities for individuals in both. Print is harder to get into, because the cost of printing and consequent trust factor. Thus print might also be more stabile area of business. There are areas of digital interactive market where the entry barriers are still quite large. One example is interactive television, where different standards are still battling out each other and only few good development tools are available.
