  One simple technique, as I'd guess his older stuff anyway, would be to create a tunnel, adding a texture to the tunnel walls.
  It's mostly trial and error, and lots of patience - don't expect to make images like that overnight!

  Just start going through tutorials. The 4x4 series had some good tutorials for abstract stuff, as does some of the computer arts mags.
