The fixed wheel phenomenon started amongst serious athlete cyclists as a way to build strength and stamina. They had brakes and were not fixed wheel, they just ran a single rear hub so that you had to work hard all the time.
They also looked pretty cool in a retro, stripped down way, so slowly became a fashion accessory.
