If you don't care how many people get back to you thats fine. But heres the thing, say 50% of the people you send it to immediately bin it because of the 'dear sir/madam' thing. That means your likely contact has already dropped considerably. So instead of possibly getting 10% response of the whole amount, you've dropped to only 10% of the remaining 50%.
This isn't rocket science, and I don't mean to sound like a cunt, but why would you willingly limit your chances from the outset?
