Get AppleCare.
I've had 2 motherboards, 2 batteries, one CD/DVDmodule, most of the casing, the infrared port lens and those little rubber feet replaced for free under AppleCare over the life of my PBG3.... (but then it shouldnt have really needed all that should it?)
The main benfit is you can call them up and they go through very methodically and solve any software/hardware issue to get you up and running again, and if it isnt resolvable over the phone, they pickup your machine and fix it, free. It's worth it.
3rd party hardware or RAM doesnt void the warranty, but they may ask you to remove it during any problem diagnosis.
