eps goes between programs better than saving something in just AI or freehand or whatever. pretty much any design app can open them and any (newer) rip software can rip them without having to convert.
we have to use eps files for backlit prints. something about the rip software we use for those printers.
eps files can have multiple objects, so your vector images arent rasterized when you save it. so you can stil alter your work from different programs.
