If you watch the behind the scenes where he's shooting Megan Fox for GQ, he's using a Hasselblad H series at some points.
it should be noted that his father, Bob Richardson, was a photographer as well. Most likely Terry Richardson knows everything his father knows, probably everything his father's colleagues know, plus everything he's figured out on his own.
Dude just likes to shoot the way he like to shoot.
