The other reason for the 2nd Amendment was to have guns available for state/federal militias, because the last thing the founders wanted was a general standing army. Better to have an armed populace who bring their own kit when called up for the common defense.
But we've pretty much had a standing army now for just shy of a hundred years, soooo...
