Use craigslist to judge, you can find plenty of stuff in both cities for under $2k from what I have seen right now... seems you can find bigger places (bigger than ny as far as i can tell) in sf in pretty good areas for around 1600-1900 (1-2bd). I have been looking in sf for a few weeks and things are dropping steadily.... my sister is in ny and has noticed the price drops as well, her and her roommates just renegotiated their rent in washington park down to 2400 for a 3 bedroom.
