I've been playing guitar for 12 years, I used to teach and have had quite a bit of music education myself.

I recommend an acoustic as a first guitar for a couple of reasons:

    1) the first things you need to learn are chords, for strumming (ie rhythm playing) this will mean you can sing along to some of your favourite pop songs. A lot of people will give up at this stage or not progress further, if you do give up at least you still have a guitar to play around the campfire, singsongs etc.

    2) Acoustics are generally harder to play than electrics (they have heavier strings, higher action, bigger necks etc), so if you get good on an acoustic then electric will be that much easier in comparison if you make the switch.

    3) if you buy an electric you will need an amp, generally make more noise and probably annoy a lot more people!

For a first guitar either way, I'd recommend yamaha as they make pretty good quality entry level instruments both acoustic and electric (pacifica electric guitars are about the best entry level electrics).

    • Interesting. I learned dexterity before chords, and found acoustic much easier than elec. So many different ways to start playingismith
    • playing, all seem to work with subtly different results :)ismith
