A few years back my friend was involved in doing this off-broadway musical about a "mentally challenged" NYC bike messenger who falls in love with a teenage Puerto Rican immigrant and all sorts of Rent-meets Westside Story plots happen.

They had the main character sing as if she was, well, really retarded. The audience didn't know if they were supposed to laugh or not, but it was really, really bad. Apparently it was based on a true story, and some Wall Street banker guy who retired with billions had used the real life handicapped bike messenger all the time, and she died but had told him she always wanted to be a broadway star. So this guy sank millions in trying to bring this train wreck of a play to broadway, up to actually footing an entire six month theater rental bill for the Wintergarden...millions. It never made it off off-off-broadway and the guy lost huge amounts of money trying to do it.

I share this story because I'm fairly well convinced that this is the fate of this as well.
