Baskerville, providers seem to consolidate, bigger companies buy out smaller networks and so on. What competition are you talking about? How many providers can you choose in your area (that are not actually resellers of one service). Is the number really increasing?
Laws like those requiring monitoring traffic and storing people's emails are handcrafted for those big players who can easily afford such nonsense.
