OK, real smart. If they kill hostages they are guaranteed to die themselves.
The whole piracy thing relies on the reluctance of corporations whose boats these are to arm their crew (because their insurance would go up massively), or take action once they are captured (because it's easier to pay the ransom). It would be incredibly stupid for a bunch of guys in boats with second rate weaponry to provoke the world's greatest military power.
