Another protest for Sri Lankan Tamils again at Parliament today. I had to wait hours for the bus because of the traffic being blocked. My sisters were a part of the protesters, and so was a huge chunk of my family, primarily from Toronto. Even though the weather was shite, everyone was there. I didn't even know there was a protest until AFTER I finally got on the bus after work.
I'm just wondering how you can even solve a war without overthrowing a government. How is it Canada's responsibility? Awareness is extremely important, of course. I mean, most people don't even know what Sri Lanka is, let alone where it is. But I keep asking the question of HOW things can be fixed, and no one ever has an answer for me.
I was at work today while waiting for that bus, so I didn't take part in the event. It was a very last-minute decision and poorly organized. But because the roads were partially blocked, it got people talking.
My sisters are so young and yet so passionate about this issue. I want to see this passion as a good thing, but I can't believe they are so hateful towards a group of people (the Singhalese, who encompass the Sri Lankan government) compared to older citizens, like my father, who once wanted to become a soldier and was actually in Sri Lanka to experience some of the topics of current discussion. My sisters actually said that all Singhalese people are a certain way (using different words, of course), and my dad had to tell them that not all Singhalese are like that. I couldn't believe it. My dad had to tell my sisters, who should be more open-minded, this.
It just baffles me that some people think war is one-sided. Even if one side is hurting more people than the other side, there are always innocent people getting killed and tortured on both sides, and not everyone from the side you are against is a horrible person. I just can't do it. I can't bring myself to go all out and support the side my family is supporting. Be passionate all you want, but don't kid yourself. And don't be ignorant to the destruction that is happening on the other side.
Good riddance. And with that, good night.
