a designer can be an artist, but if he/she is doing their job well they should not be. they should focus on solving the problem at hand.
once i had to hire a designer. this kid came in and showed me these portfolio pieces that were all slick and modern and 'arty' and i said 'do you have anything else?' and he sheepishly showed me a website he had to for a food product...it was kind of conventional, but well done....so i was like 'why didn't you show me this?' and it was because he was embarrased but, it wasn't 'art' you know, but it showed an actual range, the ability to solve a design problem, and i then hired him.
