    when you read a book does it affects you (if you read off course)
    then consider these text as simple history or fantasy, if you take them too seriously you fall in the fundamentalist trap.
    the importance is to know them and know that they are some book that weren't part of the bible, that the history of the world isn't only occidental,
    the bible is a great book, but that's it, I smile when I hear someone say "I read the bible" because its not something you can read literraly from start to end, you need to take every excerpt with a grain of salt and try to understand that what you are reading has been modified 50 times and is still modified.
    no need to be religious to find some wisdom in some text
