i was gonna say the gza, because i do think he's the best, but that's just personal opinion rather than logic. people are suggesting stupid stuff. you might think aesop rock or jeru (or even guru - though i can't see why) is the best mc out there, but try writing a paper on why. you'll get 500 words written max, and that will just be about them, not what makes them great.

he's been around forever
he's got his whole 30 different personalities deal - i'm sure you can figure out some cheesy way to say that that makes him better because there's 30 of him
his lyrics have been bitten by everybody
he could probably kill anyone in a battle - download some old freestyle tapes if you can find them - i think he's the only person i've ever heard who actually does just freestyle off the top of his head. i remember hearing him call exhibit 'everlast' on some radio show battle, and exhibit just couldn't do anything about it
there are a ton of really funny, really interesting interviews around from him that you can grab good quotes from instead of the boring "raised in the slum"/"the current urban situation is like this" type interviews that everyone else seems to do
you'd be stupid to pick anyone else.
