Looked at another way, do you have any idea how much Pepsi spends on printing bottles and cans and other packaging worldwide in a year? Or TV advertising worldwide, per year? Or print advertising, worldwide, per year?
Obviously, they're going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year exposing people to the logo.
So, even if they spend a million on designing it--which, you know, isn't just drawing the thing once in illustrator, but probably includes enormous amounts of testing, and research, brief writing, and all that--that's relatively inexpensive for them.
That it came out looking fuck-ugly is a whole different discussion.
Or, look at it another way: let's say the CEO decides to do a new logo, and he hires some out of the way office that does it for 10 grand. Then he takes it to the Board meeting. And says, "Yo, I saved us all a lot of dosh. I got Speedly's to do this for 10 grand, and I love it."
First board member, "Who the hell is Speedy's?"
Second board member, "How's this test in the Burmese market?"
Third board member, "Well, this looks like a bit like that South Korean soccer league logo thing. How's that going to go over with the Chinese? What's the research show in China?"
CEO, "Well, that's where we saved. It only cost 10 grand. So they skipped all that."
Entire board: "YOU FUCKING IDIOT. WE AREN'T SPENDING 850 GABILLION TO PRINT THIS NEW LOGO ALL OVER THE WORLD IF THE FUCKING THING ISN'T TESTED AND RESEARCHED WORLDWIDE!! YOU'RE FIRED"
