the day after an interview i send a thank you note.
if a recruiter sent me on the interview i send a thank you note to them as well.
it depends on what they said during the interview. if they mentioned they are interviewing other candidates i give it about 2 weeks, then follow up with a nice email to check on the status.
if they made no mention of interviewing other candidates i'll give it a week and send a nice follow up.
if a recruiter sent me there i have no problems checking in every 4 or 5 days to make sure they're on top of things.
i didn't hear back from one place for 3 weeks after having 3 interviews with the agency. out of the blue they called back and offered a position. i just try and not think about it and focus on knowing i did the best i could during the interview and now it's out of my hands.
