Depends on the market. For the uneducated (read: those that don't read Dwell), "PreFab" means "cheap".
We designed a prefab duplex, went all the way through drawings, factory tours, etc., but was never built.
moveinspace has it right, the costs are not much different, it is more about the speed. But do research, blocking off streets to bring the crane is isn't cheap, etc., etc.
