I could have written an algorithm for it, yes, but there's something there in the process of hand-curating the compression. You only have to squeeze it enough to fit, and no more. The humanity of it is what makes it interesting. What syllables need emphasis? To me it's more poetry than simply pulling letters out.
If the purpose was simply mechanical compression then this does a poor job. Might as well use an HTML-friendly version of the LZW algorithm or something. But where's the fun in that? (And as an aside, why would you want to use Java when Python or Perl would be better suited for this sort of programming? Even JavaScript makes more sense for this than Java.)
