Maybe things are done differently in Americaland, but couldn't you have just got phone insurance?
Warranty doesn't cover accidental dammage, and nor should it. It's hardly Apple's fault you broke it, and didn't have any provisions should that arise.
On my phone contract here in Aus. I pay an extra few bucks a month, and I'm covered if anyone steals my phone, or I sit on it, or if I jump into a pull with it in my pocket (minus a small excess). Perhaps you should stop blaming companies for your own clumsiness.
