magiclook into the amount of funding provided by other provinces and cities to the arts... private donations to the arts, and bursaries
calgary can't even draw large 'shows' of any consequence, not to mention the cultivation of local artist exports. the univesity in our city has an art program as an afterthought, and our art college is reputed, if it has any reputation for its design side, not artistic.
in all of these areas, calgary isn't even in the same league as edmonton, quebec city, win, victoria, or ott...not to mention a proper sized city like van or montreal.
the percentage of 'working' artists is very small.
where are our art houses? art collectives? and shared art spaces for art societies? not even EM, and CSIF have been able to get together to grow...
the reality is that calgary is much more interested in oil and gas and the arts isn't given a whole lot of thought.
maybe you're privy to something that i don't see...but from my vantage point, which is heavily involved in the painting, literary, film, and design industries... we don't even come close to other cities that i've both lived and worked in .
