I can't be sure on your 2A question.

In regards to your question, you need to take a step back and analyze your site and your audience.

Who is your audience? Do they have broadband? If your answer is no, then most will not stay.

If your audience is mainstream America (such as an advertisement site, or a movie site), then anything more than 100k would be excessive.

    Now, your content.
Are you making it work someone's while to have a 1.2 mb site? I have a T1, and I would wait to view Gmunk's site because I know the content will be worth it.

I would be less reluctant to wait for a complete strangers site unless it came highly recommened.

And finally, is your site streamlined, or do you have uncompressed JPGs + sound? Can you trim the fat?

Can you use loadMovies to only load content that the users need instead of loading the entire site?

    Some food for thought.
