I went to vietnam last year. Spent almost 3 weeks with my wife and her camera gear in the delta living with rice and pineapple farmers. I wasn't sure about the country at first but now all I can think about is when to go back.

The country itself is an interesting mixture of attempts at new industry.modernization and the old communist regime way. The architecture is in a constant state of decay, the land is beautiful. The people are some of the friendliest we've ever met.

We hired a private guide and for two weeks, $400 went to his pocket. It was the equivalent of one year salary for him. We covered all his expenses on top of it. He quoted a Vietnamese saying that's stuck with me ever since: "the road is in your mouth". I loved that. We went places depending on the conversations he had with locals. It opened some amazing travel option up with us. Like 8 hours in a flat bottom pineapple hauler into the heart of the delta to live with a family and see a traditional wedding take place. All the men wanted to get my ass drunk.

    Go. I fully recommend it.
