    Coming late to this party...
    It is understandable that anyone with no connection to that really ugly period in US history (be it through study, tales from grand parents, or first hand experience) might find this cartoon somewhat benign.

    Conversely, for those who know exactly why Billie Holiday sang "Strange Fruit", it is an outrage. It evokes images of Saturday night lynching parties, Emmitt Till, and burning churches.

    Yes. There were a number of comparisons of Bush to monkeys, but those were based on his general buffoonery, not racial hatred.
    And believe me - if any of those images had contained monkeys shot dead, the creator of said images would be spending the rest of his life in the belly of some nameless prison.
