I was there in 95, so I'm sure it's another world now, but I actually liked Hue, which was the DMZ during the war, a short bicycle ride from Hue was the Tomb of Ming Mang, which was very peaceful and different, Hoi An was great, Nha Trang was a nice beach town, Danang sucked, Hanoi and Sapa were amazing. Mekong Delta had some interesting things like water markets, but if pressed for time, I would skip the south. This was nearly 14 years ago now though, so feel free to disregard everything I've written. Maybe go into Cambodia if you get the chance, Akor Wat is amazing. Have fun.
