    I went to calArts. The graphic design department there is quite good, I was always impressed by their shows. Some kids did motion work as well, some of which was killer. Not sure about getting actual work but maybe try to get in with the calArts design crowd. They're connected to the greater design/motion community. Just go to an opening (they're every thursday) that features graphic design, get drunk on the free wine and strike up a conversation.
    "Around" calArts is Valencia. You won't find any work there, or anything else but a plastic "planned community" full of shiny malls, identical houses and Starbucks. LA is 1/2 hour south.
