While the tops of my teeth are chalky and quite porous, the roots are very long and they curl – like fingers – around the jawbone. This wasn't discovered until I had an abscess on one of my wisdom teeth and it had to be extracted while I was in another state on tour with my band. I had to walk until I found a dentist and just sit there and wait until they had a spot. I was very hungover since I had tried, the night before, to dull the pain with alcohol as we were driving interstate.
I was given the usual dosage of local anaesthetic, and the dentist began to pull and tug at the poor, abscess molar. At one point, he actually had his foot up on the chair to give him some leverage, but the thing wouldn’t budge – until it broke...
At this point, we did and x-ray and discovered the amazing and apparently quite rare phenomenon which my teeth possess, that being the claw-like roots below the chalk-like teeth.
After another couple of doses of local, he proceeded to cut the tooth into 4 sections from the top and extract the roots one by one.
I got back to the hotel on foot, vomited, cried and then got drunk again.

- awww why did I read it. whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyymoamoa
- good lord! ow_salisae_
- oh no. good luck :/juhls
- The best bit was knowing there were 3 more that would have to come out at some point.MrOneHundred
- I'm glad I didn't have the same problem. But my roots are extremely strong as well. The dentist had to put her foot up as welljuhls
- well, and I could hear the crunching and tearing of things since it was just local anaesthesia.juhls
- And it’s hard to yell “stop” when that’s happening.MrOneHundred
- I'm glad I got it over with in high school. But I think it's b/c my teeth matured very quickly - before high school started.juhls
- Wait. You didn't get all 4 out at the same time?
:Ejuhls - When I was a kid, (1 of 5) we couldn’t afford anaesthesia. I had to be drilled without it. My brothers and sisters didn’t mind...MrOneHundred
- ...but it was torture for me. Eventually he just gave me the novacaine shots for free. couldn’t take the screaming.MrOneHundred
- :(
juhls - Was it for taking some teeth out? Not your wisdom teeth, right?juhls
- J, I ended up doing them 1 at a time. Mainly because of the expense. My insurance only covered 1 major procedure per year.MrOneHundred
- I see. Yeah, I guess I was lucky in that I was still covered under my parents, and they both had good plans.juhls
- No just drilling. I found out years later he did most of my families’ dental work for free.MrOneHundred
- That was confusing. I’ll clarify;
• No anaesthesia for drilling as child
• Eventually given novacaine FOC
• Wisdom teeth removed under localMrOneHundred - • Separate procedures for each wisdom toothMrOneHundred
