On a positive note, looks like (and not sure how recent, have not looked at my google calendar in a couple weeks) they are in beta phase of allowing you to sync Google Calendar to the iphone calendar now.

I use google calendar on my phone and it's OK, but I can't get alerts or anything. The setup process looks a little complicated, but I might give this a shot over the weekend.
