"The truth is that pressure is a hell of a thing. Behind the veil, I was increasingly dependent on solvents. It got so bad that hours after taking charge, I had to be rushed to hospital because I had squeezed an entire tube of carpet fitter's adhesive up my nostrils, entirely sealing my whole nasal system closed from the nostril to the back of my throat. I had to stab myself in the base of the throat with a biro and breathe through that to stay alive. Even then, my first thought was only to empty three tubes of Locktite into a baggy, which I huffed through the biro pipe. I clogged up three biro pipes before I finally passed out due to a massive blood clot that had been causing sporadic fits for weeks already. I'd have died if Tessa Jowel hadn't passed by my office to borrow a bottle of thinners"
