i got it!
we'll send up a gigantic 'water balloon' made of a material that won't break but will stretch... fill it with tons and tons of water... over the course of 10 years... freeze it (by keeping it on the dark side of the moon... where it's cold...) then put this 7-8 mile wide super frozen water balloon in the trajectory of the comet? BAM! everything explodes!... if that doesn't work, i hear Actionscript 2.0 can really work miracles....
