the thing to remember with these kind of templates is that they are designed to allow people that aren't as fluent as some to make a simple and nice looking site to showcase their work.
if your work is strong and speaks for itself, who gives a fuk what the site looks like. i get so tired of people writing off indexhibit etc. missing the point totally.
