The idea behind it is great. We tried it out and it behaves more or less as Contribute does, only much more stripped down. Security is an issue of course, as they've got your FTP credientials etc.
Building something similar to this in PHP wouldn't be that difficult for experienced developers. All you need is to wrap editable areas in a specific tag that is recognised only by your software. The UI for the client-side would probably actually be trickier than the actual editable part...
