The reason RAM is often more expensive when specific to the Mac is that Apple chooses to put the highest quality chips in their machines.
You can find chips with IDENTICAL specifications at very different prices, and the reason is the quality of construction. If you want high quality RAM that's built to last, you pay for it. Apple puts them in their machines by default, but it's not a requirement.
