Bear with me for a minute here: There is a difference between an artist and a designer.
Artists can basically remain internal and harness 100% creativity, without really having to please the needs or desires of the public.
On the other hand, designers should have an external mindset, and communicate with the viewer. Obviously, since our job is to communicate, than it unwise to alienate the viewer to an extent whereby they don't even bother to understand the message being communicated.
In essence, what I'm trying to say is that while a designer has the freedom to use whatever they want, functionality and communication must take priority over creativity.
Anyways, I hope I made some sort of sense.
