well, the reality, i believe is that most people realize this. and this is why many people hate their jobs... they keep the job because it pays the bills and affords them all that unncessary materialistic crap that society or clever marketing would have us believe we need.
we place ourselves between this rock and hard place, those being need or desire for money and the job that provides it respectivley.
this reality has caused me many times to entertain the notion of moving to california and spending the prime years of my life under the sun as a debt-free lifeguard who picks up chicks all day. anyone want to join me???
