If she is a Chinese immigrant you mind need to put yourself in her shoes and appreciate that her understanding of typography might be different to yours. You might suck at laying out in Hanzi.
It is something you should have been able to pick up on before hiring but do not despair, she may well be a fast learner and if you don't bully her too much she'll be keen to improve!
I remember a light turning on in my head when, after 3 years at design school learning nothing due to getting trashed, a kind soul at work took me through the principles of typographic heirarchy. Now of course I am a design goddess however I had to eat and poo Muller-Brockmann's Grid Systems in Graphic Design and it hurt.
Go through something obvious like a good newpaper layout and how its typographic heirarchy takes your eye around the page at a distance. Make up your own lessons for her. It will be your chance to work out how much you really know!
