Just put this in the All-Nighters thread, but since I’m procrastinating, I thought I’d share it here.
A client asked me to design a CD label that followed the corporate style guide (very proscriptive and inflexible) and was “eye catching”. So I thought I’d incorporate parts of the silver disc surface into the design and work the other elements around that.
She sends me an email – preceded by a phone call that goes like this...
HER: “I can’t say I like them. They are very plain and dull. Silver is not one of our corporate colours.
ME:...
HER: I’ll send through something that takes part of the logo and uses that as a design element.
ME: The corporate guidelines forbid the breaking up of the logo to use as design elements.
HER: Just try please. Just ignore the guidelines for that part. And don’t copy what I send through, just use the idea as a basis, but still do what they’ve done.
ME:...- That’s the kind of fucking brief I get these days “stick to the style guide and make it eye-catching”.MrOneHundred
- I’d like something to catch her eye. Something hook-like.MrOneHundred
- It's lovely when people talk outta both sides of their mouths. "That thing isn't part of our guidelines. And this other thing? Forget about the guidelines"locustsloth
