We now know that the flashes on the island are some kind of time shift. It was one of these events that brought flight 815 down. Taking that into consideration, you could assume that the island should never have been there at that time and they shouldn't have been brought down actually messing up the timeline. They go back to the island to somehow stop it from ever happening making everything peachy again
